Udzungwa Mountains National Park

“The African Galápagos of Tanzania”

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and biologically rich destinations. Known as the “Galápagos of Africa,” Udzungwa is a biodiversity hotspot with rare wildlife, lush rainforests, and endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.

Unlike traditional savannah safaris, Udzungwa offers a totally different experience—one centered on nature, hiking, waterfalls, and tropical forest exploration. The park is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife including the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey, both found only in this region.

One of the park’s biggest highlights is the Sanje Waterfall, a breathtaking 170-meter cascade. The hike to Sanje Falls takes visitors through dense forest, complete with monkeys swinging through the trees, colorful butterflies, and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Kilombero Valley.

Udzungwa is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, an ancient mountain chain known for its evolutionary significance. With over 2,500 plant species, numerous bird species, and several endemic reptiles and amphibians, the park attracts nature enthusiasts, researchers, hikers, and adventure travelers.

There are no roads inside Udzungwa, which means all exploration is done on foot—something that enhances visitors’ connection with nature and makes the experience more intimate.

Udzungwa is ideal for hikers, wildlife lovers, and travelers seeking a peaceful, rainforest-focused escape.
