Kitulo National Park

“The Serengeti of Flowers”

Kitulo National Park—often referred to as the “Serengeti of Flowers”—is one of the most unique protected areas in East Africa. Known for its breathtaking floral displays, Kitulo is a botanist’s paradise and the first national park in tropical Africa established primarily for flora conservation.

Located on the Kitulo Plateau in the Southern Highlands, the park features rolling montane grasslands surrounded by dramatic peaks. During the rainy season (November to April), the plateau transforms into a colorful carpet of wildflowers, including orchids, lilies, aloes, proteas, geraniums, and countless endemic species.

The display is so vibrant and diverse that botanists have compared Kitulo to the alpine meadows of Switzerland. Over 350 species of plants grow here, many of them rare and found nowhere else in the world.

The park is also important for birdlife, particularly migratory birds and endemic species such as the blue swallow. Butterflies are equally abundant, adding to the magical beauty of the landscape.

Kitulo’s charming countryside environment, fresh mountain air, and scenic hiking trails make it an excellent destination for walking safaris, photography, botanical exploration, and eco-tourism.

The untouched, peaceful atmosphere of Kitulo offers a refreshing contrast to traditional wildlife safaris, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers.
