Nyerere National Park

“Africa’s Largest Wilderness Sanctuary”

Nyerere National Park is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa, covering more than 30,000 square kilometers of untouched wilderness. This vast landscape is a mosaic of open grasslands, woodlands, rolling savannahs, wetlands, and the mighty Rufiji River, which forms the lifeblood of the park.

The park’s remoteness ensures a safari experience that is intimate, peaceful, and far removed from mass tourism. Visitors can explore a pristine environment filled with iconic African wildlife—including elephants, lions, buffalo, wild dogs, hippos, giraffes, zebras, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species.

The Rufiji River is perhaps Nyerere’s most distinctive feature. It winds through the park creating a network of lakes, lagoons, and channels that attract abundant wildlife year-round. Boat safaris on the Rufiji provide a rare opportunity to see animals from a different perspective—hippos splashing, crocodiles sunbathing on the riverbanks, and elephants wading through the water at sunset.

Nyerere is also one of the best places in Africa to witness the endangered African Wild Dog, thriving in healthy populations within the reserve. Game drives, walking safaris, and boat excursions offer a mix of land and water experiences that few parks can match.

For travelers seeking exclusivity and raw nature, Nyerere National Park is a perfect destination—untamed, immersive, and breathtakingly beautiful.
